FAQ LIST
Q: Why should I choose your practice to treat my skin cancer?
A: Our practice is led by two oncologists who specialize in management of skin cancer. The type of radiation offered is not available in most dermatology offices. Our oncologists are always on site when the treatments are delivered by our radiation therapist.
Q: Is this type of treatment safe?
A: Yes! Electron beam therapy is recognized as an effective and safe treatment option. Our group follows national guidelines established by ASTRO (American Society for Therapeutic Radiology and Oncology). Our team includes board-certified radiation oncologists, therapists, and physicists who ensure precise treatment delivery.
Q: Is the type of radiation offered at RadiaCure better than the treatment at most dermatology offices?
A: Both Electron Beam Therapy (EBT) and Superficial Radiation Therapy (SRT) have excellent results. However, RadiaCure’s uniquely adapted electron beam therapy provides treatment just to the layers of the skin, sparing the underlying tissues that sometimes receive dose from other types of radiation (SRT). The dose to the treated area is more even with RadiaCure’s treatment, which maximizes the cosmetic results. After treatment is completed, most patients find they are left with soft, beautiful skin.
Q: How does electron beam treatment kill the cancer/treat the skin?
A: During the time the machine is working, the targeted skin is bathed with the accelerated electrons, which break up the bonds of the DNA of certain cells in cancerous or inflammatory tissues. Some of the dividing cells are killed during or after each treatment. After the course of treatment is completed, normal skin cells repopulate the area.
Q: How long does each treatment take and how many will I need?
A: The time for actually treating the skin is only about 20 seconds a treatment!
The typical patient is in and out the door in just a few minutes. The number of treatments is customized to your unique needs and your diagnosis. The specific number of treatments is discussed with you at the time of your consultation.
Q: What are the side effects I should expect and how long do they last?
A: The daily treatments are painless. Typically, after several treatments, the area of therapy becomes red and irritated, similar to a sunburn. Your treatment team will help you initiate a skin care regimen chosen for your skin type and region of therapy. Other side effects may be unique to the body part treated, and will be previewed at your consultation.
Commonly, the skin heals dramatically within a couple of weeks following the end of treatment. Often, the skin becomes soft and smooth. Some areas, like the lower leg, may take longer to heal.
Q: Do I have to change my activities during treatment?
A: Other than making extra sure that you use sun protection in the area of treatment, we want you to keep being active! We also recommend protecting the treated area prior to swimming. We will recommend certain products that have worked well for our previous patients.
Q: How do I schedule a consultation at RadiaCure?
A: Call (813)-939-5855. In most instances, a referral is not needed.
Q: If I decide to get a consult, do I have to commit to treatment?
A: No! Your oncologist will offer options for treatment. You decide what is best for you.
